Hirak Raja – A Character Biopsy

Any ardent fan of Ray or his Gupi Bagha trilogy is no stranger to Hirak Raja. He is the epitome of a shrewd politician handcrafted by Ray for a timeless reference in any era to describe an oppressive political force across geographies. Let us indulge in taking a deep dive to explore the diverse layers of this immortal malevolent fictional figure. Hirak Raja is an expert in maintaining a benevolent image globally. He is meticulous in sending invites to neighboring rulers to attend his ‘Borshopurti Utsob’ which portrays his kingdom as a welfare state and his reign as a paragon of monarchy. He also seems to have a good taste for music initially. So, he particularly invites Gupi and Bagha knowing about the accolades they received worldwide for their musical endeavors which magically petrifies the audience. He is so overweening that he fails to realize that this very power of the musical duo will eventually lead to his downfall. Just like politicians who enjoy the music till the music...

Fist of Fury

When you write a bad film review you blatantly discourage the audience  from hitting the theatres. The constitution gives you the right to speech to do any such criticism but you are ethically incorrect if you give a thumbs down to a movie named Mary Kom. The bollywood flicker may not have done justice to the real life MC Mary Kom but it has indeed made a way to reach out to the masses. Only a movie can creep in deep roots far down the masses. Books and wikipedia are only for a privileged class.  The movie wonderfully portrays the struggle of a sportswoman who fights not only within the ring but also outside it and those outside are far more tougher than the one within. She marries bears children and yet makes a comeback to where she is destined to. In a country which  worships cricketers like Gods , shouts for Brazil and Argentina in World cup ( but doesn't know the India's playing XI ) ; excelling in a sports called boxing more so by a woman is hyperbolically harde...

"Happy" Teachers Day ??

On teacher's day I pay my tribute only to the good teachers who have inspired me and motivated me to become a good student literally and endorse virtues necessary for building close to a complete man. However like most others I too had a bunch of 'bad' teachers and needless to say they outnumbered the good ones. These teachers beat you up in your kindergartens when you forget bringing a book. They rebuke a child heartlessly when he makes spelling mistake. They spank you hard for bad handwriting thereby instilling a sense of fear to go to school. I am not sure if it’s their personal frustrations that they unleash mercilessly on these poor souls and gain some sadistic pleasure seeing the children cry. Few years later as I advanced into the secondary section started the practice of employing monitors who would write my name as a willful offender for talking in a free period. And then these names would be presented to the teacher to decide what punishment must be awarded to the...

15th August

15th August, just another holiday for the common man. Sharing patriotic pics, YouTube videos tricoloured profile pics bears a testimony to his love for the country. And it is this common man who is existent in every level of the society. He gets fun in breaking rules and escaping punitive actions despite disobeying the order of land. He spits on the roads, pisses in public and if rebuked agrues he is not the only one doing it. He cherishes forecasts of his country becoming number one in some 2051  but soon hurries back to despair tasting the empirical reality. He knows misuse of democracy has been rampant in his motherland. He knows the politicians he votes for are nothing but cowards who compromise with the prevalent evils lest they might loose votes by hurting popular sentiments. Yet he religiously uses the ballot only to hear some empty promises and then finally consoling himself hearing news of tax reliefs in the budget. True it is that he doesn't go to the borders defending hi...

Sound Of Silence

Had the guts to watch Nirbaak after in-numerous negative feedback and to my surprise was greeted with not the slightest disappointment. Of course its not a film for which you would love walking into a multiplex spending a few bucks but its indeed a good watch considering film as a form of art. Before I go into further details its important to articulate that  I am no Srijit fan and   didn't appreciate even his super-hit Baishe Srabon. While his earlier flicks have entertained the popular masses (not the Beder Meye Joshna fans of course) , Nirbaak left them disappointed. However this very underrated film made my evening beautiful. The screenplay may have been slow and driving the audience incoherently towards no specific climax , but it explores the beauty of silence; the silent imagination which is very personal to us. This imagination has no boundaries and no supreme force has the power to curtail its flight. There are things humanity imagines , seeks pleasure from them i...

No Photos Please

For the first time saw Independence day fireworks with bare eyes and no wonder it was a fabulous treat to my eyes. Till date I have always tried to capture the 4th July fireworks through the lens and  kept myself busy making sure the viewfinder has it all within its four walls. Never did I realise that in doing so I was denying my eyes the treat they deserved. The world doesn't need any more photographers. Its full of them and any place you visit your electronic devices and cameras see more of it than you do. The trend developed after the advent of digital photography or as I say free photography. The moment mankind realised that it doesn't need to spend a penny for that extra photograph, it began virtually shooting at everything. It is infact an addiction today and I found it hard to restrict myself from turning on my mobile cam (I didn't carry my DSLR). While there were few who still believe that  things can be seen with eyes, most others were busy capturing the fireworks...

Say With Pride

It is indeed a news to rejoice. America has declared LGBT marriages as legal and more importantly acknowledged that sexual preference is not acquired but inherent, and legal regulations shouldn't bar a human being from loving (having consensual sex with ) another human being irrespective of gender. In a stark contrast to this, in our country a majority of our population doesn't even get to choose their life partner although they are of the opposite gender and laws have been enacted in black and white supporting such marriages. The family is still the ultimate authority in giving a nod to marriages. When citizens of this very country put up their profile pictures painted in rainbow , it smells like a revolution in offing which would tear apart the shackles of ancestral authority.  I have seen questions popping up from my friends whether those rainbow colored profile owners know  the meaning and history of it.This question however is very irrelevant according to me and I do not ...
